This wikiHow teaches you how to add arrows, hearts, and other shapes to the photos you send in the iPhone or iPad Messages app.
Steps

Open Messages on your iPhone or iPad. It's the green icon with a white chat bubble inside. You'll usually find it at the bottom of the home screen.

Open or create a new message. Tap an existing message to open it, or tap the pen-and-paper icon at the top-right corner of the inbox.
- If you're creating a new message, enter or select a recipient before you continue.

Tap the camera icon. It's near the bottom-left corner of the message. The camera preview screen will appear.
- If you don't see a camera icon, click on the arrow in the bottom-left corner of the message, and the camera icon should pop up.
- If you want to switch the camera's direction, tap the outline of a camera containing two curved arrows at the bottom-right corner of the screen.

Tap the effects icon. It's the star at the bottom-left corner of the screen.

Tap the red squiggly line. It's the third icon from the left at the bottom of the screen. This opens the Shapes panel at the bottom of the screen.
- Swipe up on the Shapes panel to expand its size. This makes it easier to see all of your options at once.
- To minimize the panel, swipe down from the top.

Tap a shape. This adds the shape to the camera preview.
- You can add more than one shape if you wish.

Place the shape in the desired position.
- Drag the shape with one finger to move it.
- To make the shape larger, place two fingers together over it on the screen, then spread them apart.
- To make the shape smaller, pinch two fingers together over it on the screen.

Tap x to minimize the Shapes panel.

Tap the shutter button to capture a photo. It's the large circle at the bottom-center part of the screen. A preview of your photo with the selected shape(s) will appear.

Edit the photo (optional).
- Tap Edit at the bottom of the screen to crop the photo, add filters, or adjust color and light settings. Tap Done at the bottom-right when you're finished.
- Tap Markup at the bottom of the screen to draw on the photo, and then tap Save at the top-right when you're done.
- To scrap this photo and take a new one, tap Retake at the top-left corner.

Tap the arrow to send the photo. It's the blue and white button at the bottom-right corner.
